Des haltes "répit" pour les personnes en situation d’itinérance à Montréal / Drop-in day centres for homeless people in Montreal

Nous collaborons depuis quelques semaines avec la Ville de Montréal pour ouvrir 7 jours sur 7, des espaces de repos sécuritaires, des haltes répit (avec toutes les mesures de sécurité nécessaire) aux personnes en situation d’itinérance. Les mesures de distanciation sociale, nécessaires pour limiter la propagation du virus ont malheureusement l’effet pervers de limiter l’accès aux ressources communautaires qui ont dû diminuer leur capacité d'accueil, de pousser les lieux de répits habituels (culturels, commerciaux) à fermer leurs portes et à restreindre ainsi les endroits possibles où avoir ce répit. 

Par ailleurs le renforcement des actions dans l’espace public par la police ou par les agent.e.s de la STM pour faire appliquer ces mesures participent à complexifier l’accès à des espaces où se reposer pour les personnes qui en ont besoin. Ces haltes offrent donc des espaces de repos pour les personnes les plus vulnérabilisées par la crise tout en respectant les mesures de sécurité et d’hygiène particulièrement indispensables pour les personnes les plus à risque de contracter le virus. La Ville a maintenant ouvert 4 de ces lieux d'accueil dont la coordination et la mobilisation bénévole de 2 d’entre eux sont prises en charge par Exeko, à:

- L’église Saint-George : accueil de 9h à 16h

- BanQ (Hall de la Grande bibliothèque) : accueil de 10h30 à 16h

We have been collaborating for a few weeks with the City of Montreal to open safe rest areas that offer, 7 days a week, respite for people experiencing homelessness (with all the necessary security measures).The social distancing measures necessary to limit the spread of the virus have unfortunately had the perverse effect of limiting access to community resources which have had to reduce their capacity, while pushing the usual places of respite (cultural, commercial) to close their doors thus restricting the places available for people experiencing homelessness to rest safely.

In addition, the enforcement of these measures by the police or by STM agents contributes to making access to public spaces more complex for those who need to rest. Respite areas therefore provide a space to rest for those most vulnerable to the crisis, while respecting the safety and hygiene measures that are particularly essential for those most at risk of contracting the virus. The City has now opened 4 four of these reception centers, and Exeko is coordinating and mobilizing volunteers at two of these:

  • Saint-George Church : reception from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • BanQ (Hall of the Grande Library) : reception from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
